Smart Keys Keys
If you own a Toyota that's equipped with smart key technology, you may be able to open the doors and start the engine without ever taking your keys out of your pocket or purse. Smart keys allow you to store different driver settings and open windows or sunroofs remotely. They could also have an option that allows you to set speed limits when your teenager is driving.
You must be within 10 feet of the vehicle to use the smart key. When you're close enough, your vehicle will activate the courtesy lights and open the door for the driver or passenger. You can then press the button on your key fob to open the trunk, too. Modern smart keys come with a telescoping blade that can be adjusted to accommodate different hand sizes. This allows you to reach the ignition and lock buttons with greater ease.
The smart key fob functions as transponder chip, much like traditional car keys. It transmits an encrypted signal to the car when you press the lock and unlock buttons. It is designed to protect thieves from stealing hot wires or taking your car away by turning off the engine immobilizer. This technology has some limitations. A tech-savvy criminal could still use a scanner device to identify the code and then send it to the key fob.
A smart key that is more recent, such as the Mercedes-Benz SmartKey, utilizes the unique technology of rolling codes. When you insert the key in the ignition, a computer in the vehicle checks the unique code prior to beginning the engine. This helps prevent unauthorized use, since it is nearly impossible for the scanner to read the same codes for rolling repeatedly.
Your smart key may be dead if the device doesn't respond to the lock or unlock buttons. The circuit board can be removed from most fobs to replace the battery. Take a photograph of the old battery and note down the location of the new one in the case so you can assemble it correctly when you're done. The first step is to take the key made of metal from the fob. A small metal button is typically located just above the key area of the fob. To remove the key, press this button. Then, remove the fob. Once you have the fob divided into two pieces, a front and a back--sliding an instrument into the notch or opening will allow you to access the battery compartment.
Look at the battery, which is likely silver and shaped as a circle. The battery will have a label that indicates the type of replacement battery you'll need. If you've got an alternative, take the old battery from its case and put the new one into. Be careful not to touch the flat surfaces of your battery. They are very sensitive to fingerprints, and can reduce battery life.
Reinstall the key fob case. If you're cautious, you shouldn't have to force it back into place. If it's not snapping into position, try gently applying pressure to the edges to remove it from the plastic frame. Reattach the key in the metal and switch it on to test the fob. It depends on the way in which the key fob was damaged, like through water or more serious physical damage. Typically, if the concealed key piece isn't damaged, you can request a new one cut at the Toyota service center and continue using it.
The case of your key fob by using an instrument that is flat such as a small screwdriver. Insert it into the slot or notch. After opening the case, you can lift the circuit board up to reveal the battery. Be careful not to pull the case in case this causes the electronic components to break. Carefully remove the old battery and note the position of the battery inside the case, so that you can replace the battery correctly.
